Training and Resources

Keep prevention awareness going throughout the year

The Prevention and Early Intervention division of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has posted a poster on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on its web site. The poster, called "Safe Sleep for Babies," is available in English and Spanish at www.itsuptoyou.org. This is also the place to find parenting tips posters and other prevention materials.

Cathy Reagan, Abilene Families editor and 2007 TCCWB award winner for Print Media, has offered to make articles that she wrote for a special edition of their newspaper available to any child welfare board that is interested. Reagan can be reached at 325-690-6168 or abilenefamilies@sbcglobal.net. Copies of the articles are also available at http://www.abilenefamilies.com. The Hill County Child Welfare Board recently made arrangements to have The Reporter News include these printed materials as a slip-in to their newspaper, which was distributed free of charge to every household in Hillsboro and by paid subscription in surrounding areas.  The paper distributed 6,000 copies without any charge to the CWB and provided another 1,000 copies at half-price for the board to distribute to elementary schools and to use at their display booth at various functions throughout the county.

The 2008 Promoting Healthy Families in Your Community packet is still available through the Child Information Gateway Web site at http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/res_packet_2008/. This information packet describes strategies and activities that promote protective factors and includes suggestions for enhancing each of the five protective factors in families; tip sheets in English and Spanish for providers to use when working with parents and caregivers on specific parenting challenges; strategies for sharing the message about child abuse prevention in communities; and information about child abuse and neglect.

Fact sheet on transitional living services for foster youth

The Department of Family and Protective Services established a Transitional Living Services Initiative as part of Child Protective Services Reform efforts.  The general objective of the initiative has been to implement a systemic and integrated approach in transition planning and services affecting youth aging out of state foster care. These programs include education and training vouchers, transitional living allowances and Medicaid, after room and board case management, and provisions for extended foster care and return to foster care. Click here for details on Texas Transitioning Youth Benefits.

Open government training reminder

State law requires elected and appointed officials (members of county child welfare/CPS boards) to complete training on the Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act by January 1, 2007 or within 90 days from the date of appointment.  If you haven’t completed the requirement, see training and frequently asked questions at: http://www.oag.state.tx.us/opinopen/og_training.shtml.  To order a free DVD of the training videos (with two handbooks on CD-ROM), call the Office of the Attorney General: 1-800-252-8011.  The AG’s office instructs participants to print a course completion certificate at the conclusion of the training to file with your county clerk.  Some clerks are redirecting officials to the county commissioners’ courts to reference this in minutes of their meetings.
