License plate in production

The Texas Department of Transportation has begun production of the “Stop Child Abuse” specialty plate.  The plates are expected to be available for purchase this summer and will generate funds in the county of purchase to be used for services to abused and neglected children. Souvenir plates will also be available to purchase for $20 with half that amount returned to TCCWB and county boards.  Be the first to buy the plate in your county and begin thinking how you can promote the sale of these plates to others in your community.

May is National Foster Care Month

This is the perfect time to say "THANKS" to foster families who "Change a Lifetime," the theme of the national campaign. National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity for acknowledging the thousands of dedicated foster families and other caring individuals and organizations who support young people in out-of-home care. For more information, see www.fostercaremonth.org.

TCCWB receives Sprint Foundation grant

TCCWB has received a grant from the Sprint Foundation in the amount of $11,000 to assist the Department of Family and Protective Services with regional teen leadership conferences for youth in foster care in 2008.  Some regional councils and county boards have assisted with these conferences in various capacities in the past.  This funding will allow TCCWB to expand its support for these youth transitioning out of foster care, which is one of the TCCWB strategic plan goals.

Each region is being allocated $1,000 to pay expenses for conferences held January 1 through December 31, 2008.  Allowable expenses include: speakers, meeting space, audio-visual rental, printing and postage, transportation and lodging, and independent living items for attendees.   Regional chairs and TCCWB members have received more detailed information on how to access the funding.

In addition to the funding assistance, regional and county board members can opt to provide additional assistance with the conferences including serving on a conference planning committee, soliciting donations from local businesses for door prizes and gifts for youth, locating other local sponsors for the event, assisting with identifying speakers and activities for the conference, and helping with registration and other tasks on the day of the event.

If you are interested in helping in any capacity with the conference in your region, please contact your regional chair or call the TCCWB Executive Director, Carolyn Bivens, at 512-484-8598.

Mark your calendars for 2008 conference

TCCWB will once again be co-sponsoring the Greater Texas Community Partners Conference to be held October 19-21, 2008, at the Doubletree Hotel in Austin.  Keynote speakers will be Dr. Karyn Purvis, a psychologist who has developed research-based interventions for at-risk children, and Victoria Rowell, star of The Young and the Restless who was raised in foster care.  Registration information will be available this summer.

Earn money for TCCWB

We have two opportunities to earn money for TCCWB just while going about your daily activities.

GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to charities the users designate.  To use, just go to www.goodsearch.com.  Under the question, “Who Do You GoodSearch For?” enter Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards.  Then use it as you would any search engine.  Make www.goodsearch.com your home page and earn money for TCCWB with every search.

Shop online? More then 100 stores like Target, Macy's, Best Buy, and Old Navy have teamed up with GoodSearch to donate a percentage of online sales to nonprofit organizations. Go to www.goodsearch.com, click on the store's logo, and shop as you normally would.

For those of you who have Randalls grocery stores in your area, you can link your Remarkable Card to the TCCWB Good Neighbor Account Number, which is 11702.  Drop by any Randalls Courtesy Booth to pick up an application for a card or to link your existing card to credit TCCWB.  TCCWB will receive one percent of the total amount of purchases.

Please spread the word about these initiatives to other board members, friends, family, and other supporters. TCCWB will use income generated to help fund activities like the annual awards ceremony, conference scholarships, board training, and other projects that can benefit county and regional boards and the children they serve.
